The Benefits Of Nutritional Supplements

By Shelly Murdock

Although an individual may eat nutritious foods on a regular basis, he or she may still wonder if nutritional supplements offer added benefits to an overall healthy lifestyle. Typically, dietary supplements are used to provide vital nutrients and minerals that may be missing from a person's diet. While they should not be used to replace healthy food, they can be used to enhance a nutritious eating program.

Such products can be used in various ways, but capsules or pills are the standard method of consumption. In addition, they can be found in liquid form, or in the form of tea or nutritional bars. Numerous individuals add such products to their diet if they feel they are not acquiring an adequate level of nutrition.

People who live sedentary lifestyles often fail to participate in an adequate amount of physical activity, and subsequently have little appetite. Such individuals may fail to acquire adequate nutrition from their diet. A person's age may also affect the amount of nutrients he or she absorbs.

Due to changes in the digestive system that occur as people age, some individuals fail to absorb the nutrients contained in the food they eat. When this is the case, a person can be following a healthy diet, but he or she is simply not absorbing the vitamins and minerals that it contains. This is where the use of nutritional supplements can be highly beneficial.

Some consumers schedule a consultation with a dietitian who can respond to concerns about which nutritional supplements are best for their gender and age. Overall, it is wise to choose traditional minerals and vitamins that have been established as beneficial. One should avoid products if there is no supporting evidence of their benefits.

In addition, vitamins A, E, K and D must be taken with a meal or snack that contains fat. This is because such vitamins are what is called fat-soluble. This means the body must use fat to absorb them completely. It does little or no good to take a vitamin supplement if it will not be properly absorbed. Also, vitamin B should be taken in the morning for maximum benefits, and iron and vitamin C should always be taken with a meal to avoid stomach upset.

Such products can also be purchased in the form of nutritional shakes and beverages. These contain proteins, lipids, and trace minerals which are necessary for optimum health. However, before adding any supplements to one's diet, he or she should first discuss it with a doctor or other health care provider.
